第１章 総則の概要
- 動物愛護法の目的と基本原則

動物愛護法の目的は「人と動物の共生する社会の実現を図ること」
（その為に動物の虐待及び遺棄の防止や、動物の適正な取扱い・管理に関する事項を定める。）
【基本原則】
・動物をみだりに殺し、傷つけ、又は苦しめることのないようにする。
・適切な給餌及び給水、飼養又は保管を行うための環境の確保を行わなければならない。 - 国及び地方公共団体の努力義務と動物愛護週間

国及び地方公共団体は、動物の愛護と適正な飼養に関し、教育活動、広報活動等を通じて普及啓発を図るように努めなければならない。
動物愛護週間は、９月20日から同月26日までとする。
第２章 基本指針等の概要
- 動物愛護法の基本指針と管理推進計画

環境大臣は、動物の愛護及び管理に関する基本的な指針を定め、これを変更しようとするときは、あらかじめ、関係行政機関の長に協議しなければならない。
都道府県は、基本指針に即して、当該都道府県の区域における動物の愛護及び管理に関する施策を推進するための計画（以下「動物愛護管理推進計画」という。）を定めなければならない。
